sumif formula if a cell contains part of a text

    Hey all,

I have a list of cells that have period/year, not in date format and I cnat go and make them date formated as they are dumped out of another program in excel.

Basically I need to do a formula that looks at the array and checks if the arrya contains 2008 and then if it does add the sum of the other column.

not sure how to construct this using Sumif - i dont know what the contains/isin notation is and cant get it to work in as a CSE formula for the same reason.

any help would be appreciated - example is below

    12/2008 07/01/2009 60632/1639/1010 1332.72
    12/2008 07/01/2009 61814/1645/1010 998.20
    12/2008 07/01/2009 62084/1644/1010 1667.24
    05/2009 12/06/2009 86988/1468/1010 2291.00
    05/2009 12/06/2009 88269/1644/1010 1667.24
    05/2009 12/06/2009 88537/1645/1010 998.20
    05/2009 12/06/2009 88841/1639/1010 1332.72
    05/2009 12/06/2009 82996/819/1010 1334.32
    05/2009 12/06/2009 82578/1059/1010 999.40
    05/2009 12/06/2009 82208/1058/1010 1669.24
    05/2009 12/06/2009 82999/819/1010 1334.32
