Excel hangs on VISTA Opening the file

I kinda understand that this is linked to external virus scan program such as Norton.

My question is how can I "disconnect" or isolate Excel from this virus scan. Or, even better, how to "disconnect" file open in VISTA from virus scan/ To me it looks like I HAVE TO HAVE a virus scan program (external & paid on a subscription basis) to run Excel.

    Anybody?

    I'm not on Vista but..

I don't see that you'd HAVE to have an AV program to run Excel but either way this may be an option if no one else has a definate answer.

If, by saying "such as Norton" you mean Norton then I'd dump it sharpish and get a less interfering scan program such as AVG. This solved many of my hang and speed issues in the XP environment.
Maybe this is something you could try whilst you have some Norton subscription remaining as a backup.

Betreft: Excel hangs on VISTA Opening the file

I know there is a bug (at least I think it is one) in 2007 that prevents you from enabling macros on workbooks which have been saved with password protection. Remove the file open password and things should work again.

Jan, is that a bug in Excel or is it due to network settings (security)? I ask because I have recently run into this problem, I think. I have posted several .xlsm files that are password protected on my website for my students. The files do not work on the campus network when they are password protected. They work just fine on every standalone PC that I have tried them on. If I remove the password, then they work fine on the campus PCs. I also have identical Excel 2003 files that are password protected and work just fine on campus.

I've been trying to track down the problem with our IT folks. They figured out that the password was causing the problem, but they don't know what to do about it. Since the files work perfectly on my home PC (not on the campus network), I figured that it must be a network setting. Do you have any links that describe this problem?

I guess I should mention that all of the PCs that I have tried these files on are running XP Pro, not Vista.

    Tim
