    Column containing a date

I have several spreadsheets which contain a columns used to post a date of activity. Recently, my computer crashed and I was given a new hard drive which contained Excel 2002.  When I tried to edit the spreadsheets, it had changed the format of the dates I had entered.  I entered them as EX. 4/1/08, they had been changed to 1/4/08.  All of the months and days were flip flopped.  I tried to change the date format by going into format, cells, date and choosing the month/day/year option.  It still would not convert the dates.  I made sure I chose the United States language.  Also, on the top bar (showing what you're typing as you're typing it) it show 4/1/08 but once I hit enter, it changes to show 1/4/08.  If I type 1/4/08 and hit enter, it changes to show 4/1/08.  What gives??  Anybod know?  Help. I'm baffled. Thanks

    Mira

It is more likely the settings in Windows. Go to the control panel in windows, international settings and set it to your region there. You may need to re-boot and will certainly need to close and restart Excel and the workbook
